I have a concern about our industry right now…

I’ve had many conversations with both business owners and implementers the past few months about how things are just not working out.

  • Business owners (your clients) are sharing how they feel like they aren’t getting the level of support they were expecting when they hire someone
  • OBM’s (you!) are sharing how clients are expecting too much too fast, and it’s impossible to give them what they want!

As you can see, this is a real dilemma and it’s causing some big issues in our working relationships. Some of you are:

  • working yourself to the bone trying to keep up with these unrealistic expectations (to the point of exhaustion!) OR
  • walking away from these clients because you don’t know how to get them to understand what it takes to get stuff done (and you end up having to look for a new client, yet again)

This is beyond frustrating, I agree! And yet I know it is something we can solve with Leadership.

Yes, there are people out there who have unrealistic expectations BUT I know that if we can lead them – as a community – to understanding what it really takes to run a biz and “get stuff done” we can solve many of the frustrations that I know you are feeling.

So what is leadership?

And how does it apply to you as a high-end virtual support professional?

As an Online Business Manager, you are driven to get stuff done and this is why your clients need you.

You work behind the scenes, you aren’t the person “out front” or on stage and people may not even see the work you are doing day-in and day-out.

You might think this means that Leadership doesn’t matter – that it isn’t for you – but you are wrong.

Even though your work takes place ‘behind the scenes’ your leadership is NEEDED now more than ever. Learning to Lead Your Client is the KEY to long term, sustainable, successful relationships. 

It starts with committing to a vision of what YOU really want to create and why it is important.

In our time together we are going to explore:

  • Who do you REALLY want to be seen as? What do you want people to remember you for? Is your real desire matching up with what people are seeing in you?
  • Creating a clear vision & mission for you and your business so that you are always crystal clear on WHY you do what you do (it’s the why that keeps you going when the going gets tough.)
  • Where do you need to step up in how you are presenting yourself?

Where there is no vision, the people perish. —Proverbs 29:18

Once you are clear on your vision then it is time to explore how you are going to lead your clients.

  • What do your clients really want and need from you? And what is the best way for you to deliver on that?
  • What is the best service model that will allow you to serve clients at a higher level while making a great living? <– This piece alone could revolutionize your business in just 12 months!
  • How to lead your clients so that you KNOW your work together is making a difference (instead of wondering if they are really getting and value.)

“There is a deficit of leadership in service to our clients. The old model of ‘let the client lead the way’ is broken and ineffective… if you really want to effect change you need to be willing to step up and lead the way for your clients.”

Now that you are clear on the model it’s time to talk money!

Leadership is not a sacrifice. It is not just “giving it all away” at the expense of yourself, your business and your family.

In fact it’s quite the opposite:

“A leader embraces the value they offer and receives in kind”

Money is simply an exchange of value. When you lead with intent you deserve to be paid – and PAID WELL – for the value that you bring to the table. And part of your leadership journey is going to be ensuring that you structure your offerings and profits to allow for this.

Together we are going to explore how you can lead the financial health of your business by:

  • Understanding how to match the value you are providing to the price that you charge (so you don’t feel like you are charging too much or too little)
  • Exploring how to confidently ask for (and receive!) your chosen rate every time you talk to an ideal client.

As shared already above, there is a HUGE issue in our industry around mismatched expectations. And it’s up to us to fix it.

Here’s the truth – if your clients don’t see you as a leader they aren’t going to listen to what you have to say.

They aren’t going to agree when you tell them something can’t be done overnight. They aren’t going to pay attention to your suggestions. They aren’t going to consider your ideas as viable.

You need to learn how to lead your clients if you ever want to be seen as an expert and have influence over them. If you no longer want to be “just the assistant” and want to truly partner, get paid well and make an impact.

The bottom line is this: Leadership is all about who are you being.. it’s not about what you are doing (and certainly not about what title you may have!)

Everyone is a leader, so long as we embrace that leader within.
