I’ve started saying no more often, and thinking things through more carefully before purchasing anything new. I ask myself if there is anything I already have that fills that need or want I am experiencing. Importantly, I am now going back through all the courses, reports, and other things I have previously bought to get the value from them. I now normally schedule time one day a week to focus on them, as well as to listen to telecall recordings.
It has really been making a difference for me. I now implement and use what I learn. I’ developing better habits, which has increased my condfidence level and self-esteem, because I am no longer wasting money by buying things and then doing nothing with them. Now when I feel that “bright, shiny object syndrome starting, I look to see what I already bought that I can work through to satiate that urge.. I’ve uncovered some real gems!
great idea Beth re: going back and reviewing what you’ve already bought… i can imagine that is a goldmine for many of us (myself included!) makes me think too of the idea of setting aside an afternoon a week as “learning time” – where we get to go and review/learn from everything that we have purchased, especially if we haven’t touched it yet.
I’m chuckling because I was just going through my inbox unsubscribing from all those BSO coaches to which I’d signed up in exactly the way you desribe, when I came across yours! Something said Listen to this before unsubscribing! Thank you Tina, for your straighforwrd clarity – you stay on my list of those well worth listening to.
Great job calling out the syndrome!
I was just thinking – with all the training “noise” and shiny attractive offers from all these great coaches, teachers and mentors out there – how will this affect the “market” going forward? 🙂
You rock!
Great job Tina. This is what I tell my clients all the time. You want to work with a coach who specializes in the particular area that you need help with at the moment. Because, if you don’t approach it that way you will end up with a lot of stuff that you will never use because you didn’t need it at that moment.
Also, I agree that you want to work with a coach who has done what you want to achieve. That way you can cut down on a lot of the shortcuts to get where you want to be.
Great Job!!
This is a great topic Tina, thanks for posting. I am guilty as charged! It makes it even harder for those of us that LOVE to learn new things. For myself, I’ve had to step back and think more strategically about what direction I am going in and then use this as the litmus test for whether a program or training is in line with that – but it sure is hard to turn away from just “cool” stuff! LOL. I’m getting better though, I’d say I’m in recovery!
Great video Tina – I can definitely relate to this. Thanks for shedding some light, and providing great content as always 🙂
Loved your video Tina. I’m so guilty of doing this. I’m a self-confessed shop-a-holic for my coaching business (especially for inexpensive products). They are collecting digital dust and those that I have taken the time to learn which were not a fit for me, that was time taken away from marketing and networking. Thanks for putting things into perspective for me. Blessings, Malcolm
Hi Tina,
Can I just say that you became my bright shiny object just yesterday? LOL….but really. I have not bought much since becoming a VA (well I can’t really think of anything I bought to tell me ‘how’ to be a VA) and I watched when the OBM movement started, but just yesterday, reading something about that industry struck home with me (no haunting, but the tears and the fact that it felt like ‘home’ was enough); so much so that I have an appt. w/Tiffany tomorrow!
But to this video I want to say I like how you mention that people can need different types of coaches at different stages in their business. The wisdom is that you hang with the people you aspire to be like so that makes perfect sense.
Also glad that you are not afraid to speak truth when it’s needed no matter what. People like you are needed to make the industry grow. “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten!” And the status quo can get quite boring!
Thanks for your courage and leadership 🙂

Hi Tina,
Thanks for your honesty. I’ve only recently decided that an online business would be right for me. I’ve been taking many teleseminars to discover what I need to know and who I’d like to work with. One category of people that I have “unsubscribed” from are those few who have criticized people for taking the free teleseminars and not immediately buying. I believe in finding a good fit and I hope I keep that in mind when I’m one of the many seeking clients.

criticized people for free teleseminars? that’s kinda odd, hadn’t seen that but agree that it’s ick to have that be the message.
Great video!! I too do the haunting thing. I see something and then can’t get it out of my mind and then will walk through cut glass to get it.
I remember something I saw on the show “Say yes to the dress”. Randy suggests that you stop looking at dresses once you have bought your dress or else you get driven crazy, wondering if you picked the right one. It is like that with coaches.
I believe that there are many great coaches out there and what they do is teach us, inspire us and champion us. We see someone getting great results with a coach and then we may become dis-satisfied with our own coach when the reality is that we may not be putting in all the effort we could be. Sometimes we think the brilliance is in the program but really the brilliance is in us and we distract ourselves with too much stuff. Speaking from experience of course 🙂
love that say yes to the dress tip Andrea – so very true. and i totally agree that of course we need to put in the effort regardless of who our coach is – alas no coach can do the work for us (even if we wish they could, LOL)
Love the ‘haunting’ technique Tina – what a great practice! Brilliant. Great video – what a fab topic. Thank you for sharing!
